Getting there

Public Transport

Athens has an extensive and affordable public transportation system, including metro, buses, and trams. From Syntagma Square, a central transportation hub, you can reach most major attractions via the metro. A single ticket costs €1.40 and is valid for 90 minutes on all modes of transport, excluding airport services. A day pass costs €4.50 and allows unlimited travel for 24 hours, excluding airport services. A 5-day ticket is available for €9, excluding airport services and bus X80. A 3-day tourist ticket, including a round trip to/from Athens International Airport, costs €22. Tickets can be purchased at metro stations and tram stops. Validate your ticket at the yellow vending machines before getting on the platform.

Walking

The center of Athens is very walkable, and many attractions are within a 20-minute walk of each other. From Syntagma Square, you can easily walk to Plaka, the Acropolis, and the Ancient Agora. Be prepared for uneven surfaces and cobblestone streets, and wear comfortable shoes.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Athens, and can be found at taxi stands or hailed on the street. Uber also operates in Athens, connecting you to licensed taxis. The base fare for a taxi is €1.80, with a charge of €0.90/km during the day (05:00 to 24:00) and €1.25/km at night (24:00 to 05:00). The average fare for a trip within the city is around €8. A 20-minute taxi ride from Syntagma Square typically costs between €13 and €20. Keep in mind that not all taxi drivers speak English, so it's helpful to have the address of your destination written in Greek.

Parking

Parking in central Athens can be challenging due to limited spaces and heavy traffic. Metered street parking is available, but it is monitored and enforced from Monday to Saturday. The city center is divided into parking zones, marked by blue, yellow, or white lines. Blue zones are reserved for residents, yellow zones are for special vehicles, and white zones allow paid parking. The maximum parking time in white zones is 3 hours. Parking garages are also available throughout the city, with average fees around €25 per day. Some recommended parking garages include Metropark Athens near Syntagma Square, Parking Siggrou near the Acropolis, and Varvakeios Municipal Parking. Street parking is managed through the myAthensPass app or through SMS for Greek mobile numbers. Rates are typically €1.80 per hour in central areas and €0.90 per hour in peripheral zones.
