During the Ottoman era, the Madrasa served as a gathering place for prominent figures in the city's Muslim community and included a spacious courtyard and residential quarters.Over the course of its history, the Madrasa faced numerous challenges. In 1821, much of the structure was damaged during the Greek War of Independence. It was later rebuilt and used as a prison, where those condemned to death were hanged from a tree in the courtyard. The prison was eventually closed, and further damage occurred during the excavation of Roman ruins beneath the site. Today, the Old Madrasa Gate serves as a historical landmark, inviting visitors to reflect on the diverse layers of Athens' past.The gate itself features an impressive stone arch and a wooden door, surrounded by greenery.
