Discover more about Agias Sofias

The Agia Sofia Church, dedicated to Holy Wisdom, is one of Thessaloniki's oldest and most significant churches. Located in the city center on Agias Sofias Square, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its historical and cultural importance. Built in the 8th century during the reign of Emperor Leo III Isavros, the church stands on the site of a former 3rd-century basilica dedicated to Saint Mark, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 7th century. The Agia Sofia's design reflects the cross-in-square Byzantine style, similar to the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The central dome, supported by four columns, symbolizes the heavens, and the interior is adorned with exquisite mosaics and frescoes. Throughout its history, the Agia Sofia has experienced various transformations. In 1205, it became the cathedral of Thessaloniki during the Fourth Crusade. After the Ottoman conquest in 1430, it was converted into a mosque until Thessaloniki's liberation in 1912, when it was restored as a Christian church. The church suffered damage from a fire in 1917 and a severe earthquake in 1978, leading to extensive restoration work. Today, visitors can admire the church's austere exterior, lush gardens, and impressive interior. The dome features a mosaic of the Ascension of Christ from the late 9th century, and the apse showcases a mosaic of the Virgin Mary cradling baby Jesus. The church also houses sculptures and carved decorations from the 8th, 9th, and 11th centuries.
