Kastélli: A Hill Steeped in History

Kastélli Hill, rising gently above Chania's Venetian harbor, is a place where history whispers from every stone. This unassuming hill was the heart of ancient Kydonia, a Minoan city that thrived for thousands of years. Archaeological digs have unearthed remnants from the Neolithic era to the present day, revealing a continuous story of habitation interrupted only briefly in the Late Bronze Age.Kastélli's strategic location made it a coveted prize through the ages. The Byzantines fortified it, building upon the ancient walls of Kydonia. The Venetians, recognizing its importance, established their headquarters here in 1252, constructing a new town within the repaired walls. The area became home to the Venetian commander's palace and the mansions of the city's elite.While much of Kastélli was destroyed during World War II bombings, the destruction inadvertently led to the discovery of Minoan pottery, revealing a major Minoan site just beneath the surface. Today, visitors can explore the ongoing excavations at Agia Ekaterini Square, witnessing history in progress. Although the main excavation site is fenced off, it offers a tangible connection to Crete's ancient past. Walking through Kastélli, one can imagine the layers of civilization that have shaped this remarkable hill, from Minoan palaces to Venetian fortresses and beyond.
