Discover more about Angelokastro

Angelokastro, also known as the Castle of the Angel, is one of the most important Byzantine castles in Greece, located near Paleokastritsa in Corfu. Built in the 13th century, possibly fortified as early as the 5th to 7th century AD, this commanding fortress sits 305 meters (1,001 feet) above sea level, offering unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding coastline. Its strategic position made it a crucial defensive stronghold, protecting the island from pirates and invaders for centuries. Visitors can explore the ruins of Angelokastro, including the remains of its protective walls, citadel, garrisons, and underground cisterns. Within the walls, discover the small Chapel of Agia Kyriaki and the Church of Archangel Michael, which stands at the highest point of the citadel on the ruins of an early Christian church. The castle played a vital role in repelling the Turks during sieges in 1537, 1571, and 1716. From 1387 to the end of the 16th century, it even served as the capital of Corfu. Although largely in ruins today, Angelokastro remains an imposing architectural site offering stunning panoramic views. The site is open to visitors most days, and a small entrance fee applies. Be prepared for a steep, uneven path to the top, but the vistas are well worth the climb.
