Discover more about Kastélli

Kastélli Hill, rising above the Venetian harbor in Chania, is a site of immense historical significance. It was the center of the Minoan city of ancient Kydonia and later served as an acropolis for the Romans. Archaeological evidence indicates continuous habitation from the Neolithic period to the present day, with only a brief interruption during the Late Bronze Age. Excavations on Kastélli Hill have unearthed significant finds, including Minoan pottery and structures, revealing that this was a major Minoan center in western Crete. The discoveries include Linear A tablets and seal stamps. The hill's strategic location, adjacent to the sea and surrounded by the fertile Chania plain, made it ideal for the development of agriculture, fishing, and maritime trade. During the Venetian period, Kastélli became the site of the Venetian commander's palace and was referred to as Castello Vecchio. The area was heavily bombed during World War II, leading to the accidental discovery of Minoan artifacts beneath the rubble. Today, Kastélli is a preserved area where visitors can wander through narrow alleys, explore historical monuments, and soak in the atmosphere of this ancient district.
