Getting There

Walking

From the Delphi Archaeological Museum, head south on the main road for about 200 meters. Take the path uphill towards the archaeological site, following signs for the Ancient Gymnasium. The gymnasium is located north of the Temple of Apollo, about a 300-meter walk. Note that the Gymnasium area is currently closed to visitors.
Public Transport

If arriving by KTEL bus from Athens, the bus will drop you off in Delphi town. From the bus stop, walk west on the main street (Vasileos Pavlou) towards the Delphi archaeological site. Continue for about 500 meters, looking for signs to the site. Enter the main archaeological site and follow the path towards the Temple of Apollo. The Ancient Gymnasium is located to the north of the Temple of Apollo, a short walk away. Bus fare from Athens to Delphi is approximately €15 one way.
Taxi

From Delphi town, a taxi to the entrance of the Delphi archaeological site is readily available. Ask the taxi driver to drop you off at the main entrance. From there, follow the walking directions to reach the Gymnasium. A short taxi ride within Delphi should cost approximately €5-€10.

Located on the southern side of the archaeological site of Delphi, near the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia (Tholos), lies the Ancient Gymnasium. Constructed in the 4th century BC, this complex was a crucial training ground for athletes preparing for the Pythian Games, second in importance only to the Olympic Games.The gymnasium comprised several structures, including the gymnasium itself, a palaestra for wrestling, and bathing facilities. The gymnasium was built on two levels; the upper level provided a covered space for training during inclement weather, while the lower level housed the palaestra, featuring a square courtyard surrounded by colonnades and rooms. These rooms served various purposes, such as changing areas, ball courts, and possibly a sanctuary dedicated to Hermes or Hercules. A circular pool, fed by the Kastalia Spring, provided a place for athletes to refresh themselves.During the Hellenistic period, the Gymnasium evolved into a hub for intellectual and cultural activities, hosting lectures by renowned philosophers. In Roman times, the baths were enhanced with hot water, offering added luxury. The site was later occupied by a Byzantine monastery, which was demolished in 1898 during archaeological excavations. Today, the ruins offer a glimpse into the athletic and social life of ancient Delphi, with remnants of the training areas and bathing facilities still visible.
