Lions Square: Heraklion's Venetian Heart

Lions Square, also known as Eleftheriou Venizelou Square, is the true heart of Heraklion, Crete. This lively square is named after the iconic Morosini Fountain, a Venetian masterpiece featuring four intricately carved lions spouting water. These lions have become a symbol of the city and a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. The fountain was constructed in 1628 by Francesco Morosini, the Venetian Governor, to address the city's growing water needs. The Venetians built a 15-kilometer aqueduct to bring water from Mount Juktas to the city. The fountain not only provided a practical solution but also showcased Venetian power and ingenuity. Originally, a statue of Poseidon topped the fountain but was later destroyed, likely by an earthquake. Over the centuries, Lions Square has been a witness to Heraklion's rich history. During Ottoman rule, the Turks modified the fountain, adding marble columns and adapting it for Muslim ablutions. However, in 1900, the fountain was restored to its original Venetian design. Today, Lions Square is surrounded by historic buildings like the Venetian Loggia and the Basilica of San Marco, blending Venetian and Cretan architectural styles.
