Discover more about The Clock Tower of Ioannina

The Clock Tower of Ioannina, a cherished landmark, reflects the city's vibrant history. Constructed in 1905 under Osman Pasha the Kurd, it commemorated the silver jubilee of Sultan Abdul Hamid II's reign. Architect Periklis Melirrytos designed the tower, blending neoclassical and oriental features. Marble carvers and stone masons from Konitsa, Kastaniani, and Vourbiani contributed to its construction. Originally located in the lower part of the city, the Clock Tower was moved to its current location in 1925 after being damaged in 1918 during a parade celebrating the Allied victory in World War I. Aristides Stergiadis, the general commander of Epirus, ordered its reconstruction in its original form. The bell atop the tower was relocated from the clock tower above the castle's main gate. Today, the Clock Tower is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can admire its architecture and explore the surrounding memorial park, which features statues of Greek warriors and historical figures. Although climbing the tower is not permitted, its stately presence and historical significance make it a must-see.
