Discover more about Historical and Folklore Museum of Kalamata

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Kalamata, situated in a charming, eggshell-blue neoclassical building that was once the residence of the Kyriakou family, offers a captivating glimpse into the region's modern cultural history. The museum first opened its doors in 1973, within the Kyriakou Mansion, an early 19th-century traditional structure. After being devastated by the 1986 earthquake it re-opened in 2002. The ground floor exhibits depict pre-industrial Messinia, with thematic sections dedicated to agricultural and pastoral life, weaving, pottery, and urban professions. Visitors can explore artifacts related to farming, textile production, and traditional crafts, gaining insight into the daily lives of the region's inhabitants. The upper floor showcases Kalamata's printing and bookbinding history, highlighting the first printing shop in liberated Greece. Recreations of an early 20th-century urban residence and a traditional coffee shop offer a glimpse into the city's more recent past. Other rooms display collections related to the Greek Revolution of 1821, traditional attire, and ecclesiastical art. The museum was founded by a local academic society with the aim of gathering objects related to the Greek War of Independence in 1821, as well as preserving more recent items from the wider region.
