Halil Bey Mosque: A Testament to Kavala's Multicultural Past

The Halil Bey Mosque, an iconic landmark in Kavala, offers a glimpse into the city's rich and diverse history. Constructed during the Ottoman rule in the early 16th century, likely around 1530, the mosque replaced a Byzantine church dedicated to Saint Paraskevi. Evidence of this earlier church, including mosaic floors, can be seen through the mosque's glass floor, revealing the layered religious history of Kavala. The mosque is named after Halil Bey, an Ottoman official who commissioned its construction as a place of worship and a symbol of Islamic presence. Architecturally, it combines traditional Ottoman features with Byzantine influences. The complex originally included a madrasa (religious school), a library, and a small cemetery, highlighting its importance as a religious and educational center. The madrasa, with its distinctive bright red color and eight rooms for students, has also been well-preserved. After the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the mosque housed Greek refugees. In the 1930s and 1940s, it became home to the municipality's philharmonic orchestra, earning it the nickname "Mosque of Music". Although the minaret was torn down in the 1950s, the mosque has since been restored and now functions as a museum and a venue for cultural events.
