Discover more about Kavala Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Kavala is one of the most important museums in Eastern Macedonia, tracing the region's history from prehistoric times through the Byzantine era. Established in 1934 and reopened in its current premises in 1964, the museum houses artifacts from across the Kavala region, including Neapolis (ancient Kavala), Amphipolis, Oisyme, and Avdira. The museum's exhibits begin with Neolithic and Bronze Age objects, including finds from the Dikili Tas settlement. A significant portion of the museum is dedicated to Neapolis, showcasing remnants of the Temple of Athena Parthenos, including architectural elements, sculptures, and votive offerings. Discover finds from ancient Amphipolis and artifacts from Thracian cities of the dead, such as Oisyme, Galypsos and Abdera. Visitors can see pottery, coins, and everyday items, offering a glimpse into daily life in antiquity. Highlights include a bust of Agrippina, mother of Emperor Nero, and various tomb artifacts. The museum also displays genuine replicas of exhibits from other Greek museums. The museum's exhibits trace Kavala's transition from ancient Neapolis to Byzantine Christoupolis and modern Kavala. The museum building itself was designed by architects D. Fatouros and G. Triantaphyllides between 1963 and 1964. The museum underwent expansion and renovation between 1999 and 2000 to accommodate more exhibits.
