Discover more about OLD TOWN - PANAGIA

Panagia, also known as the Old Town of Kavala, is a living museum that invites visitors to step back in time. Perched on a rocky peninsula, this historic district is characterized by its narrow, winding cobblestone streets, traditional houses with wooden balconies, and fragrant gardens. The blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek architecture reflects the diverse cultures that have shaped Kavala over the centuries. A stroll through Panagia reveals a wealth of historical landmarks. The Fortress of Kavala, located at the highest point of the peninsula, offers panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. Originally built in the 15th century, the fortress has been successively ruled by various empires, each leaving its mark on the structure. Visitors can explore the central circular tower, the gunpowder and food store (later used as a prison), and the garrison. The Imaret, a large Ottoman-era complex, stands as a testament to Kavala's multicultural heritage. Built in the early 19th century by Mohammed Ali, the founder of the last Egyptian Dynasty, the Imaret served as a religious school and charitable foundation. Today, it has been transformed into a luxury hotel, allowing visitors to experience its unique architecture and atmosphere. Not far from the Imaret is the Church of Panagia, from which the district derives its name. Built in 1957 on the site of an older 15th-century church, it stands where a secret monastery operated during the Turkish occupation. Wandering through Panagia, visitors can also discover the Kamares, the impressive medieval aqueduct that once supplied the town with water. Built in the 16th century, the aqueduct is a recognizable symbol of Kavala. The Lighthouse, constructed in the late 19th century, marks the edge of the peninsula, offering stunning views of the sea and the coastline. Beyond its historical landmarks, Panagia is a vibrant neighborhood with a lively atmosphere. Quaint shops, traditional tavernas, and cafes line the streets, offering visitors a chance to experience local life and taste authentic Greek cuisine. The colorful houses, some dating back to the 19th century, create a picturesque environment that invites exploration.
