Discover more about Antimachia Castle

Antimachia Castle, also known as the Castle of the Knights, stands as a testament to Kos's rich medieval history. Constructed by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John between 1322 and 1346, the castle served as a strategic stronghold, offering protection against pirate raids and Ottoman invasions. Perched on a plateau near the village of Antimachia, its location provided control over the sea passage between Kos and Nisyros, as well as the fertile plains of Kardamena. Throughout its history, Antimachia Castle played a crucial role in defending Kos. In 1457, it famously withstood a 23-day siege by an Ottoman army, with only 15 knights and a small number of locals defending the castle. Though the castle suffered damage from an earthquake in 1493, it was subsequently rebuilt and reinforced. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved outer walls and discover the remnants of the castle's interior. Inside the castle, you'll find the ruins of the old settlement of Antimachia, along with several cisterns and two churches: the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos (16th century) and the chapel of Agia Paraskevi (early 18th century). While little remains of the original settlement, the churches offer a glimpse into the island's religious history. The castle grounds provide ample space to wander and soak in the atmosphere, with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding countryside.
