The Temple of Apollo in Kardamaina stands as a testament to the rich history of Alasarna, an ancient settlement on the island of Kos. This once-magnificent structure dates back to the Hellenistic period, with its foundations unearthed beneath a building from the early Christian era. The discovery suggests that the settlement thrived well beyond late antiquity.Located near the modern village of Kardamaina, about 30 kilometers from Kos town and 6 kilometers from the airport, the temple site offers a glimpse into the religious and cultural life of the ancient inhabitants. Alasarna was one of the six ancient municipalities of Kos and served as an important religious center, as evidenced by the Temple of Apollo and other smaller temples from ancient and Byzantine times. Systematic excavations, conducted by the University of Athens for approximately 30 years, have revealed Neolithic, geometric, and classical remains, indicating continuous habitation in the ancient city.Excavations have revealed five monumental buildings from the Hellenistic period, including Building Γ, which is believed to be the temple of Apollo Pythaeus. In addition to the buildings, a significant number of inscriptions, fragments of marble statues and statuettes, terracotta figurines, and various artifacts have been discovered. The site also includes a settlement, a cemetery, and four basilicas from the early Christian centuries, further attesting to the city's prosperity, with workshops, industrial facilities, and lively commercial activity. While the ruins may not be extensive, the Temple of Apollo in Kardamaina offers a unique opportunity to connect with the island's ancient past. Imagine the religious ceremonies and cultural events that once took place within these very stones, and appreciate the enduring legacy of Alasarna.
