Discover more about Sanctuary of Aphrodite

The Sanctuary of Aphrodite, located in the eastern archaeological area of Kos Town, provides a window into the island's ancient religious practices. Founded in the late 3rd to early 2nd century AD, it may have been built upon the site of an earlier sanctuary dating back to the 4th-3rd century BC. The sanctuary is dedicated to Aphrodite in her dual roles as Pandemos, protector of harmony and the city, and Pontia, patron goddess of seafarers. The sanctuary consisted of two identical temples with altars, set within a colonnaded courtyard. Aphrodite Pandemos was linked to the unification of settlements and protected the institution of marriage, while Aphrodite Pontia, with ancient roots, was worshipped in harbors and by maritime professionals. Inscriptions reveal that newlyweds were obligated to offer sacrifices at the temple during their first year of marriage, and sailors, fishermen, merchants, and captains also made offerings. The sanctuary was destroyed by an earthquake in 469 AD. Excavations have revealed the remains of the temples and surrounding structures, offering visitors a glimpse into the religious and social life of ancient Kos. The site was later used for other purposes, including the construction of a basilica and a church, before being fully excavated in the 20th century. Today, the ruins stand as a testament to the island's layered history and the enduring significance of Aphrodite in ancient Greek culture.
