Perched on a hill at an altitude of 300 meters, the castle offers stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, the nearby islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos and the Turkish coastline. The castle's origins date back to the 11th century when the monk Christodoulos of Patmos established a settlement and monastery in the area. Over time, the settlement expanded into a fortified town, becoming an important medieval center on the island. The castle provided refuge for the island's inhabitants, particularly during pirate raids and invasions. The fortress features multiple enclosures, with the acropolis situated at the highest point. Visitors can explore the ruins of the castle, including the remains of houses, cobbled streets, and three churches: Agios Antonios, Panagia Kastriani and Agioi Asomatoi. A notable architectural feature is the central gate, dating back to the 11th or 12th century, with its rectangular design and four semicircular arches.Palaio Pyli was eventually abandoned between 1813 and 1830, likely due to an epidemic that decimated the population.
