Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
Monemvasia's lower town is pedestrianized, so walking is the primary way to get around. From the main gate, follow the main street towards the central square where the cannon is located. The walk is relatively short, but the cobblestone streets can be uneven. No costs are associated with walking.
Public Transport
If arriving by bus to Nea Monemvasia (the new town on the mainland), take the local bus that frequently runs to the entrance of the medieval castle. From the bus stop at the entrance, it's a short walk to the central square and the cannon. Bus tickets cost approximately €2.
Taxi
Taxis are available in Nea Monemvasia. A taxi ride from Nea Monemvasia to the entrance of the castle costs approximately €7-10, depending on traffic and time of day. From the taxi drop-off point at the entrance, it is a short walk to the central square where the cannon is located. Taxis can be booked by calling +30 27320 62050 or +30 27320 61274.
Parking
If driving, parking is available on the mainland near the causeway leading to Monemvasia. Parking is free, but it can be difficult to find a spot, especially during peak season. From the parking area, walk across the causeway and through the main gate to reach the town. Alternatively, there is a shuttle bus from the mainland parking to the castle gate every 30 minutes in July and August.
