Discover more about Lighthouse of Monemvasia

The Lighthouse of Monemvasia, standing 600 meters north of the old town's entrance, is more than just a navigational aid; it's a monument to the region's rich history and natural beauty. Constructed in 1896 and first lit in January 1897, the lighthouse initially used an oil-powered dioptric lighting device, emitting a red light visible for 8 nautical miles. During World War II, the lighthouse suffered significant damage and ceased operation. It was restored and reopened in 1945, with the light source moved to a metal structure beside the original building in 1951. A comprehensive renovation in 2011 led to its designation as a protected monument. The lighthouse complex includes the original stone keeper's house, auxiliary buildings, and a square stone tower that reaches 7 meters, with a focal height of 17 meters. The architecture is characterized by its military austerity and simplicity, using local stones and alabaster. Inside, a marble spiral staircase leads to the lantern. A small museum within one of the auxiliary buildings showcases the history of Greek lighthouses, including Monemvasia's own. Visitors can explore the lighthouse via a passage connecting the Laconian coast to the rock. The site offers panoramic views of the coastline and the medieval town of Monemvasia.
