Discover more about Λόφος Γορίτσας

Rising approximately 200 meters above sea level, Λόφος Γορίτσας (Goritsa Hill) offers a commanding view of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. The name 'Goritsa' originates from the Slavic word for mountain, reflecting its prominence in the landscape. In ancient times, the hill was a strategic location, leading to the establishment of a fortified city by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC. The city was later fortified with strong walls, likely by Cassander. Though its ancient name remains unknown, it has been suggested that the city may have been Iolkos, Nileia, or Dimitriada. The city was built according to the Hippodamian system. The city was abandoned around 250 BC, after inhabitants were relocated to Dimitriada. Today, Goritsa Hill is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The summit is home to the church of Zoodochos Pigi, built on the site of an older 18th-century Christian church and possibly an ancient sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy walking paths and recreational areas while taking in the sunset.
