Discover more about Armenistis Lighthouse

The Armenistis Lighthouse, also known as Faros Armenistis, stands as a proud testament to Mykonos' rich maritime history. Located on the island's northwestern coast near Fanari, about 6.5 kilometers from Mykonos Town, the lighthouse overlooks the Aegean Sea, offering stunning views of the neighboring island of Tinos and other Cycladic islands. Built in 1891, its construction was prompted by the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887, a tragedy that claimed eleven lives. The 19-meter tall lighthouse was erected to prevent similar disasters, guiding ships safely through the Aegean. The lighthouse's original light mechanism, designed by the French company Sauter Lemonier, even won an award at the International Exhibition in Paris. This mechanism was used until 1983 and is now displayed at the Aegean Maritime Museum in Mykonos Town. While the lighthouse interior is closed to the public, the site remains a popular attraction. Visitors can explore the grounds, soak in the panoramic views, and capture memorable photos, especially during sunset. The location provides a tranquil escape from Mykonos' bustling town center and crowded beaches.
