Discover more about Armenistis Lighthouse

The Armenistis Lighthouse, also known as Faros Armenistis, stands as a proud sentinel on the northwestern coast of Mykonos. Built in 1891, its construction was prompted by the tragic sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887, an event that underscored the need for a navigational aid in these treacherous waters. The lighthouse has since guided countless vessels safely through the Aegean Sea. The lighthouse itself is a 19-meter-tall octagonal stone tower with a lantern at the top. Originally, it featured a French-made Fresnel lens, a state-of-the-art lighting mechanism that won an award at the International Exhibition in Paris. This original mechanism remained in operation until 1983 and is now displayed at the Aegean Maritime Museum in Mykonos Town. Visitors to the Armenistis Lighthouse can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, including the nearby islands of Tinos, Syros, Delos, Andros, Paros and Naxos. The site is particularly popular at sunset, when the sky is ablaze with color. While the lighthouse interior is not accessible, the surrounding area offers scenic trails perfect for hiking and exploration. During World War II, the lighthouse served as a watchtower for German forces, highlighting its strategic importance. Today, it remains a testament to Mykonos' maritime history and a must-see attraction for those seeking a glimpse into the island's past.
