The Kapodistrias Statue in Nafplio is a monument dedicated to Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of independent Greece. Born in Corfu in 1776, Kapodistrias served as a diplomat and Foreign Minister for Russia before being elected as Governor of Greece in 1827. He undertook the challenging task of modernizing the country, which had been exhausted by years of war and internal conflict. The statue, created by sculptor Michalis Tombros, was commissioned in 1929 and installed in Kapodistrias Square in June 1933. It depicts Kapodistrias in a formal European dress coat, with medals pinned near his heart and gloves in his left hand. The statue is made of white Pentelic marble and is set upon a section of an oak tree trunk, symbolizing the modernizing character of Kapodistrias's work.Kapodistrias's efforts to reform the government, economy, and military faced opposition, and he was assassinated in 1831 in Nafplio.
