Bourtzi Fortress: A Venetian Jewel in Nafplio

The Bourtzi Fortress, a captivating landmark in Nafplio, is perched on a small islet in the middle of the harbor, approximately 400 meters from the pier. Constructed by the Venetians in 1473, the fortress, initially known as Castel Pasqualigo, was designed by architect Antonio Gambello to safeguard the city's port entrance. Its Turkish name, Bourtzi, meaning 'Tower' or 'Fortress,' has remained to this day.Throughout its history, Bourtzi has played various roles. It was a key defensive structure, complete with a chain that stretched to Acronafplia to block enemy ships. After Greek independence in 1822, it briefly housed the Greek government and later became the residence for the Palamidi prison executioners. In a stark contrast, from the 1930s to 1970, it was transformed into a luxurious hotel and tourist center, hosting international celebrities.The fortress itself features a central octagonal tower, surrounded by lower semicircular towers and cannon batteries. Entrances are located on the north and south sides, with a small harbor on the northeast for safer access. Today, visitors can explore the renovated fortress, including a small exhibition space, a souvenir shop, and a restored hotel room showcasing its earlier use. An elevator provides accessibility to the main level. The panoramic views of Nafplio, with the Palamidi and Acronafplia fortresses in the background, are unforgettable.
