Discover more about The Land Gate

The Land Gate, also known as Porta di Terraferma, marks the historical gateway to Nafplio, inviting visitors to step back in time. Constructed in 1708 by the French engineer Lasal, it replaced an earlier gate from the first Venetian occupation, serving as the sole entrance to the city by land. Originally, a moat filled with seawater ran along the eastern wall, requiring a wooden drawbridge for access. The gate would close at sunset, forcing those outside to spend the night beyond the walls. The Land Gate protected the lower district of Nafplio, then called “Varosi”. The gate was gradually demolished between 1894 and 1897, with the moat filled around the same time. Today, the façade has been reconstructed based on its original form. The structure features an arch with pillars, once adorned with a statue of a lion, the symbol of Venice. A plaque commemorates the liberation of Nafplio in 1687 by Venetian commander Francesco Morosini. Though few original architectural elements remain, the reconstructed Land Gate stands as a reminder of Nafplio's rich history.
