Kapodistrias Statue: A Tribute to Greece's First Governor
Step through history at Nafplio's Land Gate, the only entrance to the city for centuries, now a beautifully reconstructed landmark.
The Land Gate, or Porta di Terraferma, stands as the historical entrance to Nafplio. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, it's a reconstructed monument that once served as the city's only land access point, complete with a moat and drawbridge.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
The Land Gate is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in Nafplio's Old Town. From Syntagma Square, walk towards the Acronauplia fortress; the gate is located at the entrance to the old city, beneath the walls of Acronauplia, near the courthouse and the steps to Palamidi.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Nafplio. A short taxi ride from the port or other locations within the town to the Land Gate will typically cost between €5-€10. Taxi stands are located in central areas, or you can hail one on the street. Confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey.
Parking
If driving, be aware that access by car to the old town of Nafplio is restricted. Several parking lots are available around the edge of the Old Town, including a large, free municipal parking lot near the port. From the parking area, it's a short walk to the Land Gate. Parking is free, but availability may be limited during peak season.
