Discover more about Achaia Clauss

Achaia Clauss, perched on a verdant hill just outside Patras, is more than just a winery; it's a journey through Greek wine history. Founded in 1861 by Gustav Clauss, a Bavarian businessman with a passion for winemaking, it stands as a testament to his vision and the rich terroir of the Achaia region. Clauss initially came to Patras to trade raisins, but he soon became captivated by the area's vineyards. He purchased land in Riganokampos and began producing wine, initially for himself and his friends. The popularity of his wine led him to establish Achaia Clauss, which quickly gained recognition for its quality and innovation. The winery is particularly famous for its Mavrodafni, a sweet, fortified red wine that has become a symbol of Patras. According to local lore, Clauss named the wine after his dark-haired fiancée, Daphne. The winery also produces Demestica, the first bottled dry wine of Greece. Achaia Clauss has a rich and storied past. It has hosted numerous dignitaries, including Empress Sissi of Austria, for whom Clauss named a cellar. During World War II, the winery was spared by German forces, allegedly due to their appreciation for its wines. Today, Achaia Clauss welcomes visitors from around the world to explore its historic cellars, taste its exquisite wines, and learn about the art of Greek winemaking. The complex includes old storage areas, underground tanks and the Danielis storage room. The Imperial Cellar showcases barrels dedicated to visiting dignitaries. Visitors can also admire the beautiful view of Patras from the balcony of Bella Vista.
