He purchased land in Riganokampos and began producing wine, initially for himself and his friends. The popularity of his wine led him to establish Achaia Clauss, which quickly gained recognition for its quality and innovation.The winery is particularly famous for its Mavrodafni, a sweet, fortified red wine that has become a symbol of Patras. According to local lore, Clauss named the wine after his dark-haired fiancée, Daphne. The winery also produces Demestica, the first bottled dry wine of Greece.Achaia Clauss has a rich and storied past. It has hosted numerous dignitaries, including Empress Sissi of Austria, for whom Clauss named a cellar.
