Crete: Full day trekking in Lefka Ori

Marvellous hike in Lefka Ori

This was my third hike with Yorgos: ever very friendly, helpful and excellent guidance in preparation and execution of the hike (as twice before). We started early in Rethymno (0600Hr), to reach the starting point round 9 AM. When hardly started the hike, we immediate met a shepherd with his mule. He was collecting mountain herbs. While climbing, we noticed other shepherds with their flock of sheep in de valley behind us. The climb to the summit was easy, at 1030Hr we reached the top. The summit was not too windy, but still a fresh temperature being in the wind field. The view was great up there, we were lucky with the lack of clouds that day. On the next summit (Mavri) the view was even better: at a distance the entrance of Samaria gorge, Kallergi refuge, Mt Melidaou and many other peaks over 2.000m. The descent to Katsiveli refuge was not to intense, but still needed our full attention. Katsiveli plateau was a warm place to be, no wind. A shepherd was taking care of his mules. The way back was a smooth and easy path. We arrived at the car around 1520Hr. Overall a very beautiful hike with excellent guidance.
