Agios Frangiskos: A Venetian Echo in Rethymno

Agios Frangiskos, located in Rethymno, is a captivating historical site that embodies the town's rich Venetian heritage. Originally erected as the principal church for the Franciscan Order during the Venetian period, its impressive architecture showcases Western European influences in Crete. The church's design features a single-nave, timber-roofed basilica, further adorned with a richly decorated Renaissance doorway distinguished by Corinthian capitals.Throughout its history, Agios Frangiskos has undergone several transformations. During the Turkish occupation, it served as an imaret, or poorhouse. Later, in 1796, a girls' school was established adjacent to the church. The original school building was replaced in 1890 and continues to operate as a primary school today. The church also provided refuge for Greek refugees from Anatolia in the 1920s.Today, Agios Frangiskos serves as a cultural and historical landmark. Following restoration efforts, it now houses the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, displaying artifacts from the Neolithic to the Roman period. Excavations around the church have also revealed significant archaeological finds, including the tombs of Venetian nobles.
