Discover more about Folk Museum

The Folk Museum of Rethymno, officially named the Historical and Folk Art Museum, is located in the heart of Rethymno's old town. Established in 1973, the museum is dedicated to researching, collecting, and preserving the folk traditions of Crete, particularly the Rethymno region. The museum is housed in a beautifully restored two-story Venetian building that exemplifies urban residences during the final phase of Venetian rule in Crete. The building itself, with its arched passageway, ornate windows, and stone staircase, is a significant architectural element. The museum's collection comprises over 5,000 items, offering a comprehensive look at Cretan folk art and history. Exhibits include hand-woven textiles, embroidery, lace, baskets, pottery, and tools related to agriculture and bread making. Visitors can also view historical artifacts such as personal items belonging to Eleftherios Venizelos, banners from Cretan revolts, weapons, coins, seals, and historical documents from the era of the Cretan State (1898-1913). These items provide context of both everyday life and significant historical events. The museum also showcases traditional professions like blacksmithing and shoemaking. The exhibits are displayed to familiarize visitors with the daily activities of the past.
