    Most visitors drive to the Nida Plateau, which serves as a common starting point for hikes to the summit. From Heraklion, the drive to Anogeia village takes approximately 1 hour, and Nida Plateau is a short drive from there. The roads are generally in good condition but expect some narrow sections. Parking is available at Nida Plateau. Car rentals are available in Heraklion. Driving from Rethymno, take the road towards Anogeia. The drive is approximately 1.5 hours. Follow signs to Nida Plateau.

  • Public Transport

    While public transport directly to Nida Plateau is limited, you can take a bus from Heraklion or Rethymno to Anogeia. From Anogeia, you would need to arrange a taxi or local transfer to reach Nida Plateau, the starting point for the Mount Ida hike. Bus fares from Heraklion or Rethymno to Anogeia range from €3-€5. A taxi from Anogeia to Nida Plateau may cost around €15-€20.

  • Hiking

    The most popular hiking route to Mount Ida starts from Nida Plateau. The trail is well-marked with signs and red dots. The hike to the summit takes approximately 3 hours. From the parking area at Nida Plateau, follow the path towards the Ideon Cave. After visiting the cave, continue along the trail towards the summit. The path becomes steeper and rockier as you ascend. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.

To protect him from his father Cronus, who devoured his children, Zeus's mother Rhea hid him in a cave on the mountain. He was raised by nymphs and nourished by the milk of the goat Amalthea. The Ideon Cave (Ideon Antron), is believed to be the specific cave where Zeus was nurtured. The mountain itself is a natural park and a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network. It boasts diverse landscapes, including deep gorges, verdant forests, and plateaus. Hiking trails crisscross the mountain, offering adventurers a chance to explore its rugged terrain. The most common hiking routes start at Kamares (6-7 hours) and Ideon Antron (3-4 hours). The E4 European Long Distance Path also traverses its slopes. The easiest route to climb Mount Ida is from Nida Plateau, taking approximately 3 hours. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Crete, including the White Mountains to the west, Mount Dicte to the east, and the Messara plain to the south. A small chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) stands on the highest peak.
