Discover more about Ancient Theatre of Lindos

The Ancient Theatre of Lindos, situated on the western slopes of the Acropolis rock, is a testament to the rich cultural history of this ancient city. Dating back to the 4th century BC, the theatre once accommodated between 1,800 and 2,000 spectators. It was a central part of the Sminthia, grand city festivals dedicated to Dionysus, featuring theatrical performances, musical competitions, athletic contests, processions, and sacrifices. Today, visitors can observe the remains of the theatre, including the circular orchestra and portions of the cavea (seating area) carved into the rock. While time has taken its toll, the theatre's layout is still discernible, offering insight into ancient Greek theatrical design. The cavea was divided into nine cunei (wedge-shaped sections) separated by staircases, leading to an upper cavea. Adjacent to the theatre, the Tetrastoon, a rectangular building with an internal colonnade, was constructed in the 3rd century BC, possibly serving as a sanctuary to Dionysus Smintheus. Although use of the theatre is not permitted, and it can only be viewed from behind a perimeter fence, the site remains a significant historical landmark, inviting reflection on the cultural and social life of ancient Lindos.
