    Getting There

    Hiking

    To reach the Iron Gates located within the Samaria Gorge, you must first start your hike from the entrance of the gorge, which is in Xyloskalo. The hike begins at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters and descends through the gorge. Follow the marked trail, which is well maintained and easy to navigate. The distance to the Iron Gates is about 16 kilometers (approximately 10 miles) from the entrance. Expect this section of the hike to take around 4-5 hours depending on your pace and the number of stops you make along the way. The Iron Gates are a narrow passage between two steep cliffs that rises to about 300 meters and is breathtaking to behold.

    Public Transport

    If you're not planning to hike, you can take a bus from Chania to the village of Omalos, which is the starting point for the Samaria Gorge hike. The bus ride takes about 1.5 hours. Once you arrive at Omalos, you will need to walk approximately 1.5 kilometers to reach the Xyloskalo entrance of the gorge where the hike begins. From there, follow the hiking trail to the Iron Gates as previously described.

    Car

    If you are driving, you can reach Omalos from Chania by taking the E65 road. The journey takes about 1 hour. Upon arriving in Omalos, you will find parking areas available, but be aware that there may be a parking fee (around €5). After parking, walk approximately 1.5 kilometers to Xyloskalo, the entrance of the gorge, where your hike to the Iron Gates will begin. Make sure to check for local parking regulations to avoid fines.
