Functioning as a significant prophecy center, it rivaled Delphi and Didyma in importance. The site's history dates back to the 7th century BC, with some evidence suggesting even earlier origins linked to the worship of Cybele.Claros served as a religious and cultural hub throughout the Hellenistic and Roman eras. Pilgrims from across the Mediterranean sought guidance from its oracle. According to legend, Alexander the Great consulted the oracle to interpret a dream, highlighting the site's influence. The sanctuary features the Temple of Apollo, built in the Doric style, along with temples dedicated to Artemis and Leto. Excavations have revealed a sacred road, monumental gates (propylon), and a unique hecatomb, a structure for sacrificing one hundred animals simultaneously.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins and discover the remains of this ancient prophecy center.
