The Panagia Spiliani Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Virgin of the Cave, is situated on a hill 1.5 km northwest of Pythagorio, Samos. The monastery's defining feature is its location within a natural cave, approximately 125 meters above sea level. The cave itself is said to have been a quarry in ancient times, later becoming a place of worship. Some claim it was a philosophical school for Pythagoras or the Oracle of Sibyl. The monastery is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Inside the cave, a church houses an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to have miraculous properties. Legend says that when foreigners tried to steal the icon, it broke into pieces and returned to Samos on its own. The icon is now known as “Kaliarmenissa”. A spring with holy water is also present within the cave. Visitors descend approximately 95 steps to enter the cave. In addition to the main church, a chapel dedicated to Saint George can be found near the cave. The monastery offers panoramic views of Pythagorio and the surrounding coastline. The site is a popular destination, especially during the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on August 15th. The monastery provides a serene atmosphere, blending natural beauty, religious significance, and historical intrigue.
