Discover more about Pythagoras Cave

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Kerkis, the highest mountain on Samos island, Pythagoras Cave is more than just a geological formation; it's a journey into the past, where history and legend intertwine. This cave system is believed to have been a sanctuary for the renowned mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras in the 6th century BC. According to local lore, Pythagoras sought refuge here from the tyrant Polycrates, who ruled Samos at the time. Some accounts suggest Pythagoras fled due to accusations of corrupting the youth with his teachings, while others claim he simply disapproved of Polycrates' rule. The site comprises three distinct caves with multiple chambers, accompanied by two chapels. The larger cave is rumored to have served as Pythagoras' classroom, while the smaller one was his living quarters. The smaller cave features a flatter floor, making it more suitable for habitation. A spring nearby is said to have provided Pythagoras with fresh drinking water. The chapel of Panagia Sarantaskaliotissa (Virgin of the Forty Stairs), also known as Virgin Mary the Revealed, was constructed during the Byzantine era in the 11th century when monks sought refuge in the area. Visiting Pythagoras Cave involves a moderately challenging 200-300 meter climb up a steep path, rewarding you with panoramic views of the valley and the sea. The site offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and spiritual atmosphere.
