Discover more about Skaros Rock

Skaros Rock, a dramatic promontory extending into the Aegean Sea, stands as a testament to Santorini's turbulent past and enduring beauty. Located below the village of Imerovigli, this iconic rock formation was once the site of a formidable fortress, serving as the island's capital until the 18th century. Formed by volcanic eruptions around 68,000 BC and sculpted over millennia by erosion and earthquakes, Skaros Rock offered a strategic vantage point. In the early 13th century, the Byzantine Empire fortified the site, with Venetian architect Giacomo Barozzi constructing a fortress known as 'La Roka'. This stronghold protected the islanders from pirates and hostile forces, fostering a thriving settlement with over 200 homes, businesses, churches, and even a small harbor. Legends claim that Skaros was never conquered, a testament to its strategic importance and resilient inhabitants. However, Skaros's reign as Santorini's capital ended due to seismic activity. A series of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes between the 17th and 19th centuries caused significant damage, leading residents to abandon the fortress and relocate to Fira and Imerovigli. Today, only ruins remain, including traces of a drawbridge and two chapels, offering a glimpse into Skaros's former glory. The hike to Skaros Rock is a popular activity, offering breathtaking views of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the surrounding islands. The trail begins in Imerovigli, near the Agios Georgios Church, and involves descending a winding staircase with approximately 300 steps. While the hike is considered easy to moderate, it's best to wear proper footwear and avoid midday heat.
