Discover more about Ancient Thera

Ancient Thera, located on the island of Santorini, is an antique city that sits on a ridge of the steep, 360-meter high Mesa Vouno mountain. Named after the mythical ruler Theras, it was inhabited from the 9th century BCE until 726 CE. The city's strategic location between Kamari and Perissa offered a natural fortress and an excellent vantage point over the Aegean Sea. Founded by Dorian colonists from Sparta in the 9th century BC, Ancient Thera became a significant religious and commercial center. The city flourished, especially during the Hellenistic period under the Ptolemies, who used it as a naval base. This era saw the construction of temples, public buildings, and private residences. The Romans later conquered the island, and while the city initially prospered, it eventually declined as residents sought better living conditions along the coast. The eruption of the Thera volcano in 726 AD led to the site's abandonment. Excavations, which began in 1896 by German archaeologist Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen, revealed a wealth of historical treasures. Visitors can explore the remains of open-air sanctuaries, temples, an agora, public buildings, private residences, and a well-developed road network. Highlights include the Terrace of the Festivals, where men once danced naked in honor of Apollo, and remnants of Roman baths and Hellenistic shops. Today, Ancient Thera stands as the second most important archaeological site in Santorini, offering a unique blend of ancient history and breathtaking views. The well-organized site provides visitors with a defined route through its historical landmarks, making it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts and sightseers alike.
