Discover more about Old Madrasa Gate

The Old Madrasa Gate, located near the Roman Agora, stands as a poignant reminder of Athens' Ottoman past. Built in 1721, the Madrasa, or Islamic theological school, served as a gathering place for prominent figures in the city's Muslim community. The school comprised a spacious courtyard and residential quarters. In 1821, much of the Madrasa suffered damage during the Greek War of Independence. It was subsequently rebuilt and repurposed as a prison, with executions taking place on a tree within its courtyard. Later, the site faced further destruction during the excavation of Roman ruins. Today, only the gate remains, featuring a stone arch and a wooden door framed by greenery. Located on Pelopida Street, the Old Madrasa Gate provides a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. Visitors can explore the nearby streets, filled with cafes and shops, and reflect on the diverse layers of Athenian history. The gate is especially picturesque at night when it is illuminated.
