Discover more about Temple of Apollo

Located just north of Aegina Town, the Temple of Apollo, or Kolona, is a captivating historical site. Perched on a small hill overlooking the port, it's often one of the first sights visitors see upon arrival. The temple dates back to the 6th century BC, making it older than the Parthenon. Once a grand Doric temple, it is believed to have had 11 columns on its sides and 6 on the ends. Today, only a single column remains standing, lending the site its nickname, Kolona, which means "column" in Greek. Despite its ruined state, the Temple of Apollo holds immense historical significance. The hill of Kolona is also known for a prehistoric settlement that flourished there, with remains of houses dating back to the Late Neolithic Period. In the 7th century, it served as the acropolis of the island. Excavations have revealed eleven successive settlements on the site, showcasing the evolution of fortification systems and dwellings over time. The temple was deliberately torn down in 381 AD, and its materials were used to construct fortifications and piers. Today, the site provides a tranquil setting with wildflowers, trees, and views of the sea. Visitors can explore the ruins and visit the adjacent Archaeological Museum of Aegina, which houses artifacts discovered during excavations, including a marble Sphinx.
