Discover more about Municipal Art Gallery

The Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki, established in 1966, is a significant cultural institution displaying the city's artistic heritage. Since 2013, the gallery has been located in Villa Bianca, an architectural masterpiece on Vassilissis Olgas Avenue. This elegant building, constructed in the early 20th century, is a prime example of the eclectic style that flourished in Thessaloniki during that era. Designed by Italian artist Piedro Arrigoni, its construction began in 1911 and concluded in 1913. The gallery's collection comprises over 1,000 works, divided into several categories. These include the Thessalonian Artists Collection, representing three generations of artists from 1898 to 1967, the Modern Greek Engraving Collection, and the Collection of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Icons, spanning six centuries. Additionally, the gallery features a Modern Greek Art Collection and a Sculpture Collection. Besides its permanent displays, the Municipal Art Gallery hosts temporary exhibitions of Greek and foreign artists and collaborates with art foundations and museums both nationally and internationally. The gallery also organizes retrospectives of Greek artists and produces publications. The building that houses the gallery is known as Casa Bianca, constructed for the wealthy Jewish family Fernandez Diaz by Italian architect Piero Arrigoni. The gallery also uses the Yeni Mosque and Alatza Imaret for exhibitions.
