Discover more about Petralona Cave

Petralona Cave, situated on Mount Katsika in Halkidiki, Greece, is a natural wonder and a treasure trove of prehistoric information. Discovered in 1959, the cave quickly gained prominence after the discovery of a fossilized human skull in 1960. This skull, known as the Archanthropus of Petralona, is estimated to be between 200,000 and 700,000 years old, potentially representing one of the oldest human remains found in Europe. The cave itself is a stunning display of nature's artistry, adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millennia. The cave spans over 10,000 square meters, featuring a series of chambers, corridors, and unique geological formations colored red by bauxite deposits. Besides the human remains, the cave has yielded a rich collection of fossils from the Ice Age, including those of cave bears, lions, hyenas, horses, and deer. These findings provide valuable insights into the environment and wildlife of prehistoric Europe. Visitors can explore the cave on guided tours, which provide information about its history, archaeological finds, and geological formations. Photography is not allowed inside the cave to protect the natural formations. Adjacent to the cave is the Anthropological Museum of Petralona, which showcases many of the cave's finds, including a reconstruction of the site where the Petralona Skull was discovered.
