The French engineers were seemingly inspired by bridge projects on the Seine, and the minerals were shipped from France.
For many years, it carried vehicular traffic until it was converted to pedestrian use in 1996. The bridge offers lovely views of the Lithaios River and its green banks. A statue of Asklepios, the ancient Greek god of medicine, stands nearby, a tribute to the area's historical connection to healing. The sculptor Theodoros Vasilopoulos created the statue.
