Nestled in the eastern foothills of the Agrafa mountains, Fanari Karditsas is a village steeped in history and blessed with stunning views of the Thessalian plain. The village, with a population of approximately 433, occupies the site of the ancient town of Ithome, mentioned by Homer as 'Klomakoessa'. The area's strategic importance has been recognized since ancient times, with the Byzantine castle standing as a testament to its control over key passages between Thessaly and Epirus. The castle, dating back to the 13th century, is remarkably well-preserved and features five square towers, a strong gate-tower, and remnants of a cistern and barracks within its walls.Today, Fanari offers visitors a chance to explore its historical landmarks, including the castle and the Fanari Folklore Museum. The village also serves as a gateway to the surrounding natural beauty, with opportunities for hiking in the Agrafa mountains and exploring nearby villages.
