Lake Smokovo: A Thessalian Oasis

Lake Smokovo, or 'Limni Smokovou' in Greek, is a relatively new addition to the Greek landscape, created in 2002 on the slopes of the Agrafa mountains. This artificial lake in the Regional Unit of Karditsa spans approximately 8.5 square kilometers and holds 237,000,000 cubic meters of water. The dam, an impressive structure, was constructed between 1981 and 1994, facing some delays due to local concerns. The lake primarily serves to irrigate the Karditsa plain and also supports hydroelectric power plants that began operating in 2005. Beyond its functional purposes, Lake Smokovo has become a significant ecological site, attracting diverse flora and fauna. Bird watchers will find a variety of species to observe, while hikers can explore the trails that wind around the lake, offering panoramic views. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the lake's edge, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and picturesque scenery. The northeastern side of the lake is particularly recommended for admiring the landscape. The nearby Smokovo Baths, with their therapeutic hot springs, provide an opportunity for relaxation and wellness. The springs have been recognized for their curative properties since the 17th century, and the modern hydrotherapy center offers various facilities, including whirlpool baths and a gym.
