The Osman Shah Mosque, or Kursum Mosque (meaning 'Leaden Mosque' in Turkish, due to its lead-covered dome), is a captivating reminder of Trikala's Ottoman past. Constructed in the 16th century (likely in the late 1550s) , the mosque was commissioned by Osman Shah, the governor of the Sanjak of Trikala and grandson of Sultan Selim I. Legend says that Osman Shah ordered its construction as a sign of gratitude after being cured of a severe illness by the local Greeks. The mosque was designed by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also designed the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. It is the only mosque in Greece designed by Sinan, making it an architectural treasure. The building consists of a square prayer hall topped by a large, 18-meter diameter semi-spherical dome. A minaret stands on the northwestern corner. Originally, the mosque complex included a madrasah, an alms house, and a caravanserai. However, only the founder's octagonal türbe (tomb) remains today, which now serves as a storage site for archaeological artifacts. The mosque serves as a museum, offering insights into the cultural significance of the site. Visitors can explore the mosque's interior, adorned with calligraphy and decorative motifs, and wander through the peaceful gardens surrounding the building. The mosque is a UNESCO protected site.
