Discover more about Wall of Kassandreia

The Wall of Kassandreia stands as a testament to the strategic importance of the Kassandra peninsula throughout history. This ancient structure, also known as the 'partitions of Cassandria' , stretches across the isthmus near Nea Potidea, effectively transforming the peninsula into an island. Originally constructed in the 3rd century AD, with major contributions by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, the wall aimed to protect the peninsula from barbarian invasions. Procopius, a historian, noted its significance during Justinian's reign. The wall saw large-scale reconstruction in the early 15th century under John VII Palaeologus. Over its lifespan, the wall featured approximately 18 towers along its 1,200-meter length. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-mighty barrier, gaining insight into the region's complex past. Excavations, renovations, and landscaping projects are ongoing to enhance the site and make it more accessible to the public. Although parts of the wall and its towers are submerged due to the opening of a canal and rising sea levels, the remaining sections offer a tangible link to the past.
