Discover more about Stavronikita tower

Perched atop a verdant hill in Sani, Kassandra, the Stavronikita Tower stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. Also referred to as the Sani Tower or Tower of Agios Georgios, this Byzantine-era structure dates back to the late 14th or early 15th century. Erected on the grounds of what was once the acropolis of ancient Sani, the tower's strategic location provided a vantage point to guard the coastline. Originally, the tower was built to protect the 'metochi' (dependency) of the Stavronikita Monastery on Mount Athos. While the monastery itself was founded in 1543, the tower predates it, with some archaeologists suggesting it was constructed as early as the beginning of the 15th century. During this period, over 100 similar towers were erected in Halkidiki to defend against pirates and robbers. The tower may have also served as an observation post, allowing locals to watch for approaching threats. Today, the Stavronikita Tower is a popular attraction, drawing visitors to the luxurious Sani Resort. Although the tower is not particularly tall, standing at 10 meters on the west side and 12 meters on the east, its sturdy construction has allowed it to endure the passage of time. Originally featuring three or more floors with battlements, only two floors and an underground water tank remain. The tower provides a medieval backdrop to the Sani Festival, a renowned summer event featuring music and arts.
