Discover more about Goritsa Viewpoint

Goritsa Viewpoint is perched on Goritsa Hill, a natural landmark rising approximately 200 meters above sea level on the southeastern edge of Volos. The name 'Goritsa' itself is derived from Slavic origins, meaning 'small mountain,' a fitting description for this prominent hill. Beyond its natural beauty, Goritsa Hill is steeped in history. In the 4th century BCE, Philip II of Macedon recognized the hill's strategic importance and established a city here. The city was later fortified by Cassander. While the ancient city's name remains unknown, archaeological excavations have revealed a planned urban center with a regular street grid. Some researchers speculate that the city may have been Orminion. The city was gradually abandoned after Demetrius Poliorcetes founded Demetrias in 294 BCE. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of this ancient city and enjoy breathtaking views. At the summit stands the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, built on the site of an earlier 18th-century Christian temple, with evidence of an ancient sanctuary predating it. The viewpoint offers magnificent vistas of the Agria plain, the Pagasetic Gulf, and the city of Volos, making it an ideal spot for photographers and nature lovers. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon to witness the stunning colors of the sunset.
