Walking

The name Goritsa, derived from the Slavic word 'Gora' meaning mountain, signifies 'small mountain,' a fitting contrast to the imposing Mount Pelion nearby.
Historically, the hill's strategic position, offering complete control over the plains of Volos and Agria and the sea, led to its fortification in the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. The ancient city, whose name remains unknown, was later reinforced with strong walls, possibly by Cassander. However, with the founding of ancient Dimitrias in 294 BC, the city on Goritsa Hill was gradually abandoned.
Today, Λόφος Γορίτσας is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
