If you are already in Portaria, head towards the main square and follow the signs to Λόφος Γορίτσας. The walk is approximately 1.5 kilometers and takes about 20-30 minutes uphill. The path is well-marked, offering scenic views along the way.
Public Transport

From Volos city center, walk to the central bus station (KTEL Volou). Purchase a ticket for Portaria. The bus ride takes approximately 30-40 minutes. From the main square in Portaria, follow the signs to Λόφος Γορίτσας, a 10-15 minute walk uphill. Bus fare is approximately €2-€3.
Car

If driving from Volos, head towards Portaria, approximately 13 kilometers away. Once in Portaria, follow signs to Λόφος Γορίτσας. Limited parking is available near the entrance. The drive takes about 30 minutes. Parking is free.

Λόφος Γορίτσας, or Goritsa Hill, is a captivating destination located near the city of Volos in the region of Thessaly, Greece. This natural elevation, reaching approximately 200 meters, presents a unique blend of scenic beauty and historical significance. The name Goritsa, derived from the Slavic word 'Gora' meaning mountain, signifies 'small mountain,' a fitting contrast to the imposing Mount Pelion nearby. Historically, the hill's strategic position, offering complete control over the plains of Volos and Agria and the sea, led to its fortification in the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. The ancient city, whose name remains unknown, was later reinforced with strong walls, possibly by Cassander. However, with the founding of ancient Dimitrias in 294 BC, the city on Goritsa Hill was gradually abandoned. Today, Λόφος Γορίτσας is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can explore the walking paths, enjoy the panoramic views of the Pagasetic Gulf, and discover remnants of the ancient city, including sections of the old walls and building foundations. At the summit stands the church of Zoodochos Pigi, built on the site of an older 18th-century Christian church, with evidence suggesting an ancient sanctuary existed there before. The site provides an opportunity to connect with nature, explore local history, and enjoy stunning sunsets over the landscape.
