Discover more about Roman Odeon

Nestled in the elevated reaches of Patras' Ano Poli (Upper City), the Roman Odeon offers a captivating journey back to the city's Roman past. Built in 161 AD, during the reign of Antoninus Pius, this remarkably preserved structure served as a venue for musical performances, theatrical productions, and public gatherings. It is located on the west side of the ancient acropolis and the medieval castle between Germanos Str. and Sotiriadou Str. The Odeon's design reflects typical Roman architectural principles, featuring a semi-circular orchestra, a stone-paved stage, and tiered seating sections (cavea) that could accommodate up to 2,500 spectators. The exterior high wall had five entrances towards the skene (scene) and two towards the backstage. The proskenion (front of the stage) was accessible by two flanked built staircases. The Odeon, as well as the Stadium, were decorated with statues. The structure was accidentally unearthed in 1889 during port construction and meticulously restored to its original splendor by 1961. Today, the Roman Odeon continues to be a vibrant cultural hub, hosting performances during the Patras International Festival and other summer events. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins, admire the architectural details, and imagine the vibrant atmosphere of Roman Patras. The surrounding area also displays archaeological finds, including sarcophagi and mosaics, providing further insights into the city's rich history.
